  • A diamond in the rough... A great bass guitar that just needs some love to fulfill its potential
Color: Natural
Great bass for the money, but set your expectations correctly. First of all, the bass will likely arrive not quite ready to go out of the box. Inexpensive guitars rarely arrive ready to play. Either be prepared to set it up yourself or pay someone to do so. Mine was hardly playable out of the box. When it arrived the action was set very high, however the intonation was good so the setup needed was minimal. I straightened the neck with the truss- up and shaved down the bridge saddle. The nut was actually cut well depth-wise, though the slots were a bit snug. I opened the string slots a bit to make sure they allowed the string to glide smoothly. The nut is cheap plastic as is the bridge. I may replace them in the future with bone if I bond well to this instrument. Once adjusted, it played very nicely. I experienced the same issue with uneven sound from the pickup as others have had. The fix was super easy! When I had the bridge out to shave it down, I pulled out the pickup a bit and carefully scraped off the plastic coating on the pick-up "bumps" using a utility knife. I only scraped the plastic off of the bumps that didn't produce enough sound, in my case the D and G strings. I replaced the pickup in its nook and all was fabulous. That tiny adjustment made a world of difference and now all of the strings are equally voiced when plugged in. Finally, I relocated the strap button that is on the neck heel. It interfered with my access to the upper frets so it got mounted on the bottom of the heel. As others have mentioned, the rosewood fingerboard and bridge were very, very, very dry. The driest I have ever seen. Liberal application and re-application of lemon oil took care of it, though it took quite a while to get it properly conditioned. That is all of the bad, which isn't really bad at all. As someone else said, it's like buying a guitar that needs the finishing touches done. For $75, it's still a good deal even if you had to pay a pro to do it. Construction is good, but the finish is not absolutely perfect in some small spots. I've seen Epiphones with the same and worse finish flaws, so it came as no surprise. However, the binding is decently done with triple on the top and single on the body and neck. The frets were nicely finished with no loose, sharp or high frets. The perfling is very nice and doesn't look cheap on other inexpensive guitars that clearly use a decal. This is either inset or a really nice decal. In any case it looks good. The finish is glossy, but not sticky like some gloss fender necks I've played. The neck profile is a chunky-ish C profile that feels good to me. The headstock has an understated logo that is unfortunately under the clear coat, so getting rid of it is a chore I won't undertake. It's not bad, as it doesn't grab attention so it is easy to live with. All in all this guitar is an amazing value at $75. Better quality than other brands at a much higher price point. This bass guitar is a winner in my book, as long as you are ready to do some work setting it up. ... show more

  • Great Acoustic/Electric Bass Guitar Value for the Money
Color: Natural
For the price, this is an incredible acoustic/electric bass guitar. I play a Kay upright bass in a bluegrass band and wanted to experiment with an acoustic electric bass. This was the perfect choice because it didn't cost much. I was worried I was going to get junk at this price but was I wrong on that...... 1. Overall quality of build: Yes this isn't a Gibson or Martin....but it is 1/20th the price. The build quality is mechanically sound but it is very plain....uhhhh the price of this guitar is cheaper than replacing a Martin pickguard....The body is solidly built, not at all like those Sears guitars of days of yore.... 2. Playability: Feels comfortable to hold...fingerboard is good. Mine did not have any buzzing. Going up and down the fretboard, it felt pretty good....I have felt better fretboards on $1000+ basses, but this one will not impede you. Good musicians can get good sound and performance out of this guitar... 3. Strings: REPLACE IMMEDIATELY. The OEM strings sounded a little flat and I felt a little disappointed. I replaced them with D'Addario Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Bass strings, EPBB170. The bass came to life. I heard all the high frequency overtones with the fundamental tones. These strings pushed me over the edge so that I REALLY want to use this bass now. 4. Overall Sound: Surprisingly good. Compared to my 4 and 5 string electric basses, this bass definitely had a good acoustic sound by itself and also going through the preamp. The pickup was able to detect the small high end frequencies when playing an acoustic instrument. I was very surprised how good the electronics and pickups are on this unit. Usually decent electronic pickups cost more than this whole bass. This bass with D'Addario strings has a lot of character. 5. Utility: If I were playing electric bass with a band, I would use this bass more because it gives the bass sound much more character. You can equalize the sound down to make it sound more like an electric bass. But because it is so cheap, you wouldn't mind bumping into the wrong end of a mike stand or if at the beach getting sand into the sound hole. A great way to add bass to a jam at the park or the beach when you don't have electricity. 6. Loudness: If you are in a jam with 3 or more loud strumming Gibsons and/or Martins, you won't be heard. Good time to take a break and get a beer. However if you jam with musicians who are cognizant of a balanced sound product, then you can be heard...the guitars just has to ratchet back some. Jamming with bluegrass folks, you wont be heard...banjos will drown you out if you don't have an amplifier by your side....that's time to get the upright. 7. Lookin Good Status Symbol: NOT!!! Save your pennies and go buy that Martin or Gibson. Real bass musicians will give your equipment a double take but if you play well, they will be asking how you got a good sound out of this no name.... 8. Practice bass: This is great for practicing. You don't need to plug in to hear your solo practice sessions. I really like this feature. OVERALL: I am very happy with this bass and get happier the more I use it. I will revise this review if I start changing my mind... ... show more
