  • A perfect balance
Color: White/Gray Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
I have an otterbox defender, the official bumper case, and two flip covers. The note 2 is pretty big, so I try to match how I'm going to be carrying it that day with how much I'll be using it. Whether in the breast pocket of a suit jacket, the front pocket of some worn jeans, the side pocket of a winter coat, or the cell phone pocket of some Dickies work pants. The commuter case seems like the best of many worlds, with protection, handling, retention, in a package that doesn't get stuck in your pocket or refuse to slide in. I got the glacier color because it was more than half off for some reason. Normally I wouldn't go with a light color, especially on the dark phone (titanium) but I makes a good contrast. The buttons are much better than the defender series which need a pretty pointed push to get them to activate, and feel mushy when you do. The commuter's buttons are crisp and stick out much more, offering increased purchase when grabbing the sides of the phone, but rounded enough not to catch and turn your pocket inside out. The strategic placement and balance of the grippy sides with the smoother plastic seems just right to give you more confidence when moving the phone to or from your hands. The overlap "lip" that extends forward of the screen seems to have the same angle of the defender case, but instead of being hard plastic, it's the rubberized insert, and feels very solid when all you have is two fingers on the phone. One of my favorite things about this phone is the slim profile. It's so big that its easy to forget how trim it is from screen to back. That is also part of why I have so many cases; I like the phone to be as trim as possible for the situation. I might have the perfect case here, because it feels about the same thickness as the bumper case on the back with little additional bulk on the sides, and for the added traction and protection, it's hard to see switching from this case for some time. I should note the outer hard shell is much looser than my wife's s3 commuter; hers almost snaps on, while mine fits more like an overcoat. Not sure if this was intentional, but for someone who changes cases frequently, it's perfect. ... show more

First and most importantly, it serves its purpose in protecting the phone, that is certainly not in any doubt. I'm a bit clumsy and with the Otterbox on it, I've dropped my Note 2 several times onto the solid surfaces (concrete sidewalk, hard floors) with no adverse effects or damage. So why only three stars? Well, there is one huge drawback: overheating. I live in a warm climate (Los Angeles) and with this case on my phone, it would overheat at least two or more times a day. It got to the point where I had to remove the case because the overheating was seriously affecting my ability to use my phone without causing it to overheat. I have to state, for the record, that I work mostly outdoors, so maybe if you're in a climate controlled environment all day, this may not be an issue at all. But if you don't have the luxury of being in a 60 - 70 degree building all day and you happen to be in one of the warmer areas of the world, this is a serious consideration. Cellphones do not have cooling fans and rely instead of being able to just disperse the heat to the ambient air (which is why they get hot at times), but with this case acting as an insulator, it instead retains the heat. I realize this may be a necessary design concession, sacrificing one thing (cooling ability) for another (superior drop/shock/weather protection) but I feel it's something most users may not even realize and may even mistakenly attribute to the phone manufacturer. ... show more

  • Great Fitting case with lots of protection without a lot of bulk
Color: black Product Packaging: Standard Packaging
After I finally decided to take the leap and go to the Note II, the first thing that I looked into was a case because I heard how the larger screens were prone to shattering dropped the wrong way. With such an expensive phone, i didn't want to give up on protection for some other functionality but also didn't want to double or triple what is already quite a handful. After lots of research, I decided on this case and have not regretted it. What really sold me was that the case that wasn't horribly expensive also came with a screen protector that usually set me back another $15-20 for a decent one. Things I love: +two piece case +great fitting hard and soft cases that nest perfectly and keeps port covers snug when closed +free (essentially) screen protector +great protection only adding about another 1/3 to 1/2 thickness of bare device +easy to install and remove (to clean out dust and grime build up Things that weren't so great: -the screen protector isn't as nice as the old ZAGG ones I used to buy, but it was free (essentially). small dust particles that are tiny (1/64") causes a bubble that can't get smoothed out about 1/16" in size. The Zaggs would smooth out and form around it so that it virtually disappears. As a note, when the screen is on, the buble is not very noticable at all. -screen protector does not cover the entire screen (cuts about 3/16" from top edge where the camera and sensors are. more an aesthetic than a functional complaint) -the lip that protects the screen makes access to the physical home button hard to access (thinking about shaving it down) -the hard shell is very slick. As others said, it really should have more useful texture. -a pop out tripod would be great. or even a strategic hole you can insert the s pen to act a stand. also goes back to the fault about the slick hard case can't even prop it up against something to watch a movie cause it slides on most hard surfaces -very stiff power port cover. hard to insert with one hand without fear of bending the port Overall, I am very happy with this case and wouldn't hesitate recommending or buying another Otterbox again. I have dropped my Note several times and it has always made a nice thud instead of a crack sound. ... show more
