  • Superb - the new gold standard for portable headphones
This is my new standard for stylish portable headphones. Hats off to Master & Dynamic, a brand that is relatively new to me, for getting so many things right on the MH40! While its sound quality alone is not worth the ~$400 at the time of this review, so many other aspects of this headphone come together in this rugged yet elegant that make this worth the hefty price tag. - SOUND - The sound quality of this headphone is superb, especially considering its size and lack of a requirement for an amp or DAC. However, it must be noted that this headphone is quite bass heavy! This was very jarring for me, and it rubbed me the wrong way at first. I thought that, perhaps, I had fallen for this headphones' looks and got myself a dressed-up pair of Beats! However, once I got used to the pronounced bass, I noticed that it does not quite overpower other aspects of the music (though I think it toes the line here; the bass is quite pronounced) and retains detail in the upper ranges. If you prefer a more balanced, clear sound, I would suggest something else (such as the BeoPlay H6, which is also a great looking headphone and at the same price range as the MH40). If you're a basshead, I think these headphones will hit the sweetspot of fullfilling your bass cravings while giving you everything else that is a part of a balanced tonal diet. - BUILD QUALITY - Wow, these headphones are built like a tank. Everything is made out of solid metal and leather. As a result, these are a little heavy for the size, but not uncomfortably so. Enough to give these a solid heft to make these headphones feel solid. These are my go-to portable headphones and I have know that these will serve me faithfully for years to come. - COMFORT - These headphones are so comfortable. The ear pads are stuffed with memory foam, so they feel like pillows for your ears. The headband is also padded and comfy (which we take for granted, but sometimes headbands can look cozy but actually put pressure on weird spots on your head... not so with these). - PORTABILITY - These headphones sound great from any source, and I did not notice any difference in sound quality when I used an AMP and DAC. The built in mute button is handy. The supplied removeable cable can be connected on either the right or left side, which is handy feature. The unused cable port can be used to plug in another pair of headphones to share music (a cute feature that I honestly don't use too much). Master & Dynamic really did a wonderful job making a really solid product. I really can't pick out anything they did wrong (unless you just don't like the bassy sound signature). I think this headphone is worth the high price tag. ... show more

  • Look nice but they fall off
If you want to ride the subway and look cool, these are the cans for you. The leather is nice and some design features (like the mini-plug on the right can so you can swap cables) are thoughtful. The sound has nothing to distinguish it (which I count as a positive --- you want to hear the music not the headphones). Sound output is very hot so you can blast your eardrums, if so inclined. Which again I count as a positive. On the gripe side, the ear pieces are made of metal and very heavy. If your work situation is you have cans clamped on your head all day, I find them very fatigue-inducing -- I simply have to take them off after a couple of hours or I go crazy. And something else really drives me crazy. Because the way the cans are hinged to swing back and forth, they tend to fall off if you bend over. Imagine you're on the subway and it's very crowded. You drop something and lean down to pick it up. Suddenly without warning the Master and Dynamics fall off, and get trampled in the rush. Or if you're cooking a cake and lean over to check the recipe and bam! the cans go right into the batter... Get what I mean? Oh, and one more gripe, which way do you put them on? I give you 30 seconds to figure that out. Yes! Ah, here it is! A tiny L and R stamped inside on a metal bracket where you never see it. ... show more

  • Love at first song
BASS If you’re looking for some bass heavy headphones, these are not it. The bass that these provide is a clean precise and very tight bass. I put on Astroworld by Travis Scott and although the bass wasn’t punching, I was still very impressed. SOUND The first song I played was My Song by Labi Siffre, and in all honesty there were some music components that I did not catch with my Sonys MDR V6s. These provide the cleanest sound. I’m currently listening to Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged set and it feels like they’re playing right in front of me..amazing. LOUDNESS On full blast, I can’t hear any of my surroundings. On about 75% still pretty solid; but on 50% I can start to hear the Laker game that I’m watching on TV. BUILD From the leather to the metal, you won’t find another set of cans that give off that retro-look while providing top-notch material. SUM UP These are by far the best set of cans I’ve ever purchased. If you’re tired of the branded headphones, this should be your first stop. Only problem is that I wish I would have known of these sooner. ... show more

  • Reduction in quality over the years
I bought my first paid of MH40s 3 years ago and still really like them. They've held up extremely well and still look and sound great. I recently decided to buy a second pair after giving my first pair to my gf. Annoyingly, the first one I ordered was DOA. Both headphone jacks did not work properly, and the headphone cord couldn't get a proper connection. So, I sent those back and ordered a second one. And, once again, one of the headphone jacks (right side) is broken. Luckily, the left side works, but I've reached the conclusion that quality of construction at M&D has diminished over the years. I will be returning the most recent pair and looking for a new brand of headphone to listen to. I tried the Oppo PM3, and while they sounded great, they also had a crappy headphone jack connection that easily cut out (a disturbing trend among $400 headphones). The M&Ds are built like a tank on the outside, but it seems the insides are not as good as they used to be. I've also noticed a distinct drop in bass from my very first pair bought 3 years ago, and the pair I currently have on hand purchased last week. Weird. ... show more
