  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Hopeful - Something To Keep Me On Track All Day - Everyday!
UPDATE (04/14/2015) - As promised, here is an update on the Polar A300. AWESOMENESS! The watch gives me a daily caloric burn and I was burning a lot less than I thought I was (guess I know why the weight wasn't just melting off - ha!). I'll come back with more updates for CONS/PROS/TIDBITS as I come across them. Thanks for reading and kudos for making a healthier lifestyle for yourself!! We can do this! ;) PROS - 1. Battery life is fantastic! Maybe because I'm so used to tablets and phones that needs to be charged on a daily basis, this watch has gone about a month for me and not needed a charge! I ended up charging it on my own when I saw the battery bar low, still didn't get a "low batt" signal, just charged it and at the same time updated everything on my FLOW desktop app. 2. Phone FLOW app is a great tool. You can see how many steps you take in a day. I try to hit 10K steps a day. It also logs your sleep and show you just how much RESTFUL sleep you are really getting. How does it do it? Magic. LOL. I don't know but I think by using this tool, I can better incorporate what it tells me towards my path to better health. As mentioned before I try to hit 10K steps a day, incorporate cardio exercise daily and I really need to get more sleep! This watch and app helps me focus on these goals. It also tells me how many calories I burn in a day, which is great for keeping me on track with my food intake to make sure calories eaten are less than calories burned. Also the app will show you how far you are to hit 100% activity level for the day, if you are at 83% for example, it will give you suggestions on what you can do to hit 100%, like 14 minutes of jump rope or 45 minutes of walking, etc. Cool app. Downloaded for free. 3. Reminders - I am digging the reminders that pop up when I have sat for too long. My job requires me to sit for most of the day and sometimes I forget to get up and move around a little, I like that the watch vibrates and beeps for me to get up. 4. It's smart - sometimes I want to start logging my workout and I go to the activity that I am about to engage in - AND THEN I FORGET TO ACTUALLY HIT START!! oy! But the watch will beep after a couple minutes to remind me that I have not hit start yet. Thank you watch. And then there's those times where I accidentally hit start too soon and have to stop right away. The watch is smart enough to ask me "that was a short session - do you want to record it?" :) 5. WATERPROOF - Great for swimming and other water activities. Wore this to go snorkeling and it held up well. No problems! CONS - 1. The watch strap is rather long, so there's this annoying piece that sticks out at the end and I frequently get it caught when getting dressed or putting on a jacket and such. But it doesn't bother me enough to reduce the number of stars. Would be nice if they offered different strap lengths. 2. Uber sporty in style. It's cute when I wear it during casual days and to work out, but not when I want to wear a sundress to brunch and still track my day's activity. Maybe I can get different color wrist bands, but they're rather pricey for just the bands. :( TIDBITS - 1. It isn't necessary to wear the heart strap all day. Only wear it when you are engaged in activity/exercise. I can hear it ticking when I wear it and I assume it is using some sort of battery to function, so think about that. Unless you are actually needing it to get your heart rate while working out, save the battery and take it off when you are done with your workout. 2. I'm going to try and put the watch in a purse all day to see if it still accurately tracks my day during non-activity times. I've also put the watch around my jean's belt hook to keep it on my body but not wear it, because I was wearing other bracelet accessories that day. It may not be as accurate, but it can give me a good ballpark figure of my day. ************************************************************* ORIGINAL REVIEW 3/14/2015 ************************************************************* ORIGINAL REVIEW - Just ordered this. I'll have to come back after a period of use to update my review but for now I like the fact that this is something I can wear everyday. I originally had the FT7 but it turns out that it does not calculate calorie burn all day accurately. You can wear it all day, but the calories will not be accurate. They are extremely accurate during times of exercise, but during the day if there is an elevation in heart rate due to stress, fatigue, etc the watch will mistake it for exercise and over estimate your caloric burn. The models are not designed to give basic metabolic rate. So I'm giving this A300 a try. There's a short video on the Polar website that shows what you can do with it and it appears promising. It functions just like the FT7, but you CAN wear this one all day to get a calorie burn even when you are not working out. There is a reminder on there to help you stay active and you can set goals of activity levels to hit. Also, with the A300, you can not only track your activity 24/7, but you can get a personal daily activity goal, and the A300 shows your progress towards the goal by filling up an activity bar. With the Activity Menu, you can sync it to the visualized Flow app or Flow web service (included with A300). The A300 counts the steps you have taken and tells the distance covered, it shows the calories you have burned all day. You can also wear it while you sleep and it detects your sleep time and quality by checking your Flow app or Flow website. You only need to create a login to get started with Flow (app or website) and it's free. How accurate all of this is, I cannot attest to, but I will use it as a general guide to keep me in the right direction and on track. Hopefully this can help me lose my last 10 pounds!! :) There's also a nifty "personal motivator reminder" in which the A300 will remind you when you've been still for too long. :) I'll be back to update the review after a few weeks of usage. For now, hope this review helps you guys decide if you are debating between the FT7 and the A300 or if you are looking for something to wear all day. OH - and the heart band strap is pretty comfortable. I wore it for nearly 24 hours and barely noticed. But that may be because women are used to wearing bras. You only need to wear the heart rate monitor during times you are engaged in an exercise/activity. Keeping my fingers crossed that this lives up to the hype! ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars SO Much Better than Fitbit and Garmin
I purchased no less than five other activity trackers before I found this one: the Garmin Vivofit 2, the Garmin Vivosmart HR, Fitbit Charge HR, Fitbit Blaze, and the Mio Fuse. The Polar A300 was perfect for my lifestyle; I workout 6 days per week for at least an hour per day. My workouts include at least 3-5 days of heavy weight training, Hiit, bootcamp or circuit style workouts, yoga, and spin class. The Polar A300 provides an comprehensive tracking system. I'm no longer tracking my workouts with one app, then going to another to see my steps, sleep and daily activity. The Polar does it all! The Polar A300 is a very functional fitness tracker. It has all of the features of the Garmin and the Fitbit, but it simply works better. If your sole activity for exercise is running, then any of these will probably work for you. If you do any other type of exercise, the Polar is the way to go. During setup of the Polar, you can choose between three activity levels for your profile. Based on the level you choose, a daily goal is set for you. Unlike the Fitbit and Garmin, the activity goal can be reached in three ways (intense or moderate exercise, or steps). For example, on days I do a cardio based workout, I typically reach my activity goal by the end of the workout. On my rest day, I may have 12,000+ steps yet I still have not reached my activity goal. On a strength training day, I accomplish a large percentage of my activity goal, but I might need to take a walk around the block to meet the goal. With the Garmin and Fitbit, I would often begin my day with an intense 500+ calorie burn workout and still end the day without reaching my goal because I didn't get the purposed number of steps. The Polar A300 has a number of advantages over other fitness trackers. Here are some that stood out to me: * It's waterproof;although Garmin devices are also waterproof, Fitbit is not. * Battery life: I am going 2-3 WEEKS between charges even though I use the Polar connected to a heart rate monitor for at least an hour per day. The other activity trackers that I tried required charging every 3-5 days. * Heart Rate Monitoring: Wrist based heart rate monitoring is simply not as accurate or dependable as a chest strap. With both the Fitbit Charge HR and the Fitbit Blaze, a good sweat would prevent the device from detecting my heart rate. The heart rate on the Garmin Vivosmart HR was always lagging or just plain wrong (way off). Neither of these will pair with a chest strap. At first I thought it would be useful to know my resting heart rate; a head-up when I'm over training or getting sick, but with the way the Garmin averages the resting heart-rate, it doesn't work for this purpose. I also found that I am very aware of an increase in my resting heart rate and I don't need a device to show this. There was no real benefit to 24 hour heart rate monitoring. The Polar A300 does not do 24 hour heart rate monitoring or even wrist-based heart rate monitoring. It connects to the Polar H7 chest strap. Even better, I've been able to pair the Polar with my Scoshe Rythym + arm band Scosche RHYTHM+ Heart Rate Monitor with Armband, Black since I'm not crazy about wearing a chest strap. I can choose the type of activity that I am doing and set the watch to record. I can also pause the workout on the watch, view the current heart rate, heart rate zone, time, and calories burned. (Note that you do not get smart notifications if the watch is in workout mode, a feature I love). The Polar A300 does not calculate a resting heart rate, but it does do something better: the Polar OwnIndex Fitness Test (similar to a V02 max test) to measure cardiovascular fitness. To take this test, you simply put on the chest strap and lay still for a minute or two. The first time I took this test, my score was a 42 (which was great for a 36 year old female!). The app instructed my to take the test again in 6 weeks to see if I've improved. I'm looking forward to the next test; I like having a goal to work towards (beating my previous score). * Smart Notifications: the Polar A300 does vibrate when your phone is getting a notification, text, or call. You have the option to answer or decline a call, but you cannot respond to a text (none of the trackers I tried offered that option). You only get a line or two, so you can't always see the full message. The Fitbit Blaze was slightly better for receiving text messages because you could read the whole message. * Time to Move! One of the great features of the A300 is the "Time to Move!" notifications. Even after I reach my activity goal for the day, the watch will vibrate if I've been sitting for more than an hour. I found it so ironic that the Fitbits did not have this capability. * Display: The time and date are always displayed on the Polar A300; it does not require some elaborate wrist movement to may the display turn on (and yet the battery life is still so much better than the other activity trackers!). * Durability: This is a functional watch; it does not have a touch screen. I purposely chose the A300 over the A360 because I'm pretty rough on watches. I don't want to worry about scratching a delicate screen. I wanted something that worked well, not that just looked pretty and that's what I got. The Polar A300 has a comfortable band and seems to hold up to most anything. I read some reviews that the band was too long for some women, as it is unisex, but I have not found that to be the case. I have very small wrists and the strap does come all the way around my wrist, but it's held in place with the ring around the band. I chose the A300 over the M400 because I am not a runner and I don't need GPS. More than that, I read that the M400 does not have a vibration feature. I haven't tried the M400, so I can't say for sure, but this was important to me. Overall, this is a great device; it's perfect for my lifestyle. I highly recommend to anyone who wants a fitness tracker that can monitor workouts, daily activity, and sleep. ... show more
