Description

The Phantom 3 Advanced continues the proud tradition of DJI's Phantom series and brings several important innovations to the Phantom's rich feature set. The Phantom 3 Advanced carries a fully stabilized 3-axis 1080p full HD video camera for smooth, crisp videos and still photos. To allow you to see what the drone sees, DJI has engineered a new generation of their Lightbridge technology that allows 720p HD digital streaming of live video directly from the drone. You can control the camera and see video in real time as you fly and you can even share the video using the DJI Pilot app's advanced features. To aid indoor flying, the Phantom 3 Advanced includes an integrated array of optical and ultrasonic sensors call Vision Positioning that allows you to fly precisely indoors without a GPS signal. The Phantom 3 Advanced includes all the tried-and-true features you'd expect from a DJI drone, including GPS navigation with auto takeoffs and auto landings, intelligent high power flight battery, a built-in safety database of no fly zones, and a powerful mobile app for your iOS or Android device. • An Excellent Quad with Great Features...Fun to Fly, Great Video and Stills!
Style: Quadcopter Only
I had shopped a lot for a quadcopter. Read many reviews and had initially decided on a different brand. I'm glad I waited a little longer to order. The Phantom 3 Advanced is super. First flight was in the back yard with house, shed and trees nearby. Quick takeoff to about 4 feet and released the controls. It stayed right where I put it. Went up to 100 feet to be above trees. Flew around the area within training radius. Flawless flying. Landed softwly on a 2.5 foot square piece of plywood with no problem. The camera on the Phantom 3 is built-in and mounted on a gimbal that provides very stable high-quality HD video. You can set video quality at several levels. While still photos have not usually matched the video quality of cameras attached to quadcopters (with the exception of pro-level cameras and much more expensive aircraft), the camera on the Phantom 3 Advanced does an admirable job. I have created 360 degree panoramas and the frames stitched together flawlessly. I shot an oblique of a golf course in two frames and stitched it together (see photo which I have included in the review). With the new upgraded software, the Phantom now has several new automated flying features. So far I have only used the Point-of-Interest feature. Fly above a point you want to circle, set the POI, move to radius and elevation you want to fly, set the speed you want to fly, tell it to go and it will smoothly circle the POI as long as you want. Easy to stop the circling with a switch on the controller or on the display. Makes great smooth video. New upgrade also lets you record video at 2.7K. Lower than the 4K of the Professional but much higher than HD, allowing you to do crops and on editing. The app also has a video editor that lets you trim or couple videos. Doesn't do the sophisticated editing of a true video editor but provides a lot of functionality for free. Three other modes in the new software/firmwar that I haven't tried are follow-me, fly way-points and course-lock. I will be trying the course-lock for some video. It will make it easy to fly a straight line while rotating the aircraft and changing the angle of the camera. With course-lock, pushing the stick to go forward always goes in the direction of the course-lock, regardless of the direction the aircraft is pointing. Thus, you can rotate the aircraft to keep the camera aimed at an object as you fly on a straight path past the object. When I ordered the Phantom, I also ordered an inexpensive tablet for display. It was cheap enough that if it didn't work well, I could use it for something else or give it away. It didn't work! I then tried my wife's iPad Air 2. It worked flawlessly. I thought about ordering something else from the list DJI provided but I knew the iPad Air 2 worked the way I wanted, so I just got one. I don't regret it. I would prefer something smaller but I love this display. It could be a little brighter in daylight but can still be seen fairly well if you keep it in your shadow. A friend has designed a sun shade so I will probably have one of those, soon. If you want a stable display, get one of the devices DJI recommends! The free DJI Go app that you use with the Phantom is very good software. Provides excellent control of the Phantom from a tablet or phone as well as working in conjunction with the remote controller that comes with the Phantom. The app lets you see what the camera sees from further away than the FAA allows (line of sight and no higher than 400 ft.). The app also provides map view and satellite view with the tablet. If the tablet doesn't have built-in GPS, the maps can be cached while you have an internet connection. The remote controller has over a mile range so you shouldn't lose control or video while flying (especially if within the FAA limits...you certainly won't be able to see the Phantom at a mile!). The app has streaming capability, too, if you are connected to the internet while flying. I haven't tried streaming to internet, but did test my iPad streaming to an Apple TV so I could see on the big screen what the Phantom camera was seeing (I don't recommend this as a flying technique, for obvious reasons). This is a way you can entertain a group in the house while you're outside flying (within the distance limits of Apple TV). The Phantom comes with one battery which provides about 20+ minutes of flying time. Of course you'll want to land before the battery run dead. The Phantom and app will help out with this by warning you or by landing on its own (I like to do the landing to be sure it is coming down in a safe place). The package doesn't provide a carrying case but there are many available. I made one from a Sterilite translucent plastic storage box (26"Lx16"Wx13"H outside dimensions). I added foam padding with cutouts for the aircraft, battery, controller and cables and put foam on the top to hold the aircraft in place (see photos). While the FAA puts, what you might consider very severe restrictions on flight, I am a pilot and wouldn't want to run into one of these in the air. Other aircraft have to stay above 1000 feet in populated areas so flying the Phantom at 400 feet provides separation from other aircraft. I strongly recommend reading and adhering to FAA restrictions. Too many "drone" pilots deviating from the rules are going to cost all of us a lot of freedom to have fun with these. ... show more

  • Blown away by video quality and stability. The Phantom 3 Advanced/Pro is an amazing quadcopter platform
Style: Quadcopter Only
The media could not be loaded. DJI hit a homerun with this series of quadcopter. I know the Phantom 4 is already out but the Phantom 3 broke the rules for easy flights and amazing video. There are a lot of reviews here on Amazon that already said what I would say so I will avoid repeating that but say this...The Phantom 3 is the most stable quadcopter I've ever had the pleasure to pilot. That said, this is NOT a toy. This is a serious craft that requires your full attention when piloting. There are a lot of things to know and understand when going into this category of Quadcopters. Flying it indoors is something only an insane person would do: It needs room to fly! I found that when piloting it outside in an open space, the controls are very smooth and the GPS keeps it fairly stable. The controls are predictable and when going on extended flights, the range is incredible! I take my time when outdoors and ensure it is fully calibrated and everything is charged before every flight. The smoothness of the controls is what blows me away the most. This thing is really, really stable! The reaction to flight controls is instant and very accurate. There is little lag and little drift when in GPS mode. The video signal was extremely clear, even over a mile away. This is out of the box performance, folks. Put the Phantom in ATTI mode and you get less flight accuracy but somewhat smoother control overall. You have some GPS functions like return-to-home but the flight controls have more sustain or "drift". I wouldn't recommend this for anyone unfamiliar with controlling a quadcopter or folks in more closed quarters. ATTI mode will also drift in the wind so it is possible to lose orientation of flight. However if anything goes wrong in GPS mode (which has not happened to me but I've seen others with issues), you can switch to ATTI mode and guide your Phantom 3 home again without the safeguards of GPS. The DJI software is pretty good, too. I find all of the controls and information I need during flight while piloting the Phantom 3. If I ever lose sight of the craft, the software gives huge assurance as to its location by revealing real time telemetry. Instead of panicking and hitting the return-to-home, you can easily see where the craft is based on your location. Using just the telemetry data, you can guide the Phantom back home without ever having to look at where it is. Of course, you have to be careful with obstacles like trees/buildings/etc but when piloting outdoors in big open spaces, you can do it without even using the lightbridge video stream. The software also records your flight inputs into a "black box" if you will. Every flight records these inputs and uploads sample thumbnails of the flight to the DJI cloud where you can review your flight and replay the inputs. Have a crash and wonder what happened? It's recorded so you know what happened. The camera is another huge plus. Every bit of the camera can be set to manual, giving the pilot full control over aperture, ISO, shutter speed and more. There are also many after market filters you can fit on the lens to give more clarity during flights. If you aim the camera 20deg down, you will never get the props in your video. Learning how to manipulate the gimbal and thinking ahead about how you want your shots to look is paramount to the success of your video capture. Like I said, this isn't a toy! You can dial in settings and make some very professional looking videos. In the end, when you think about the overall cost for having an HD camera that can fly 400' above you and take stunning, smooth video for under eight hundred dollars, this is the platform for you. Keep in mind that a fully rigged setup will run you about $1400 when it's all said and done. That would include extra batteries, a case, extra props, multi-charger, lenses, case stand, harness, screen protector, gimbal guard and more. Stuff you really should have if you are going to enjoy this hobby fully. Remember to read the manual, take your time when flying and practice your maneuvers. It's also highly recommended to look into the AMA for insurance and don't forget to register it with the FAA! Be legit and keep this hobby fun and save for everyone by following the rules and flying safe! Always use a spotter (Trust me on this one) and be sure to have fun! Oh I should mention that I already crashed it once: Blew two motors, broke 4 props and broke the gimbal. All pieces were replaceable/repairable and the Phantom is already back in the air. Even with a crash, you can still recover and have fun! ... show more
