  • Purchased new 4TB MX500 SSD. I needed to use Crucial Mgmt software and update drive firmware.
Capacity: 4TB
I just bought the 4TB version of this MX500 drive. It's working great now after installing the drive optimization software (Storage Executive) from Cricial and enable the "Momentum Cache" checkbox. It's interesting that it sets aside a 360GB partition, but it really helped. But they don't give you the full 4TB to start with. You get about 3.6TB! Apparently, this is common in the industry and a marketing ploy. I did a lot of testing with huge 1TB file transfers that I need to move around. The software also automatically checks for drive firmware upgrades and it automatically updated it on my newly purchased drive. Initially, the drive would disappear from being recognized on my laptop and then reappear again after rebooting. Then I went to the Crucial Support site to check the compatibility of my hardware with your drive. My laptop wasn't listed, so I guess it's hasn't been recognized as compatible? I didn't think that was something I needed to check? Anyway, I wish I had. But it seems like everything is ok now, fortunately. Everything is working fine after installing that Crucial drive mgmt software. But I've installed countless drives over the years and I hadn't even heard of needing to use something like this. I'm used to just installing new drives and having everything just work. But bottom line, after finding out about this, I'm ok with it and it's working great, but I'm still left with the feeling that it shouldn't be necessary. Unlike many others, I didn't buy this for a boot drive. I bought the 4TB MX500 SSD to have a fast Data drive. I have a NVMe a 2TB M.2 as my boot drive, that I upgraded from a 256GB drive. On my laptop, I couldn't get the Acronis disk cloning software to work well enough to get my cloned drive to boot. I did it three times and every drive cloned wouldn't boot. Then I bought the Macrium Reflex 8 full version drive cloning software and it worked perfectly. The amazing thing was that it was able to clone the boot drive while Windows 11 was running! Just install software, plug new drive into USB port with adapter and click clone drive and follow the prompts. After cloning completes. shut down, swap drive to original drive's boot location and restart into Windows 11. Just that easy! Now finally I'm all set! ... show more

  • Very easy install
Capacity: 1TB
The MX500 with 1tb of space replaced an old Western Digital disc drive, which is still in running condition after four years, thank you WD, in a Lenovo P91 M4488 desktop. I borrowed the sata connection and power cable from the CD drive in the computer, then booted the computer from a USB drive holding a copy of Acronis True Image 2016. I cloned the WD drive to the Crucial which took about three hours, removed the WD drive, moved the MX500 over to the sata and power connections that had belonged to the WD drive and it came right up, no problems. I've had the drive for only a few weeks, but it has run problem free and has made a great improvement in the response of the computer. ... show more

I'm typing this review on the computer with newly cloned SSD. Acronis True Image for Crucial is a free version for Crucial product owners with limited functions. I'm not sure if it works for other brands of SSD. So I can't register support with Acronis. But Crucial support is helpful. It worked for me on the 3rd try. The successful sequence is: 1. Create recovery USB drive, about 1 GB 2. "chkdsk C: /r" Then reboot. I have a nearly full WD Blue 500GB original. The first reboot took a whole day to complete the chkdsk. The 2nd reboot took 3 hours. Even then, the newly cloned SSD still had trouble on first boot. Perhaps the original HDD just keep losing flakes during the cloning process? 3. Boot from the USB and clone the original to new SSD. 4. Swap the SSD into the internal bay. 5. New SSD failed reboot. Insert bootable media. Do nothing and close the Disk Recovery pop up. Win 10 OS will run a forced disk check on the SSD. Win 10 is up running. 6. Shutdown. Remove bootable USB. Normal start. Elation ! ... show more

  • Competent 1TB SSD
Capacity: 1TB
I have used several Crucial SSD products over the years. I am still running a MX100 in an old laptop and even used a mSATA MX200 in a small Gigabyte Brix PC. I purchased the MX500 because Crucial drives just work. My father's PC experienced a drive crash, and I did not know if it was physical or just a bad Windows update. So, I figured i would replace the mechanical HDD with an inexpensive SSD. I did a fresh install of Windows 10 without incident. In retrospect I got a great deal on the 1TB drive but should have opted for the 2TB model since it was also priced really well. My dad doesn't need 2TB of storage necessarily as a boot drive but shoulda, woulda, coulda....... I do enjoy how my dad is impressed that he no longer has to turn the computer on and let it "warm up" before he can use it. So even though he had a drive failure, the quality-of-life improvement that an SSD brings was an added benefit once his PC HDD failure was squared away with an SSD upgrade. If you need a SATA SSD, Crucial drives are great! ... show more

  • Built in power fault/data protection is the #1, #2, and #3 reason you get this.
Capacity: 1TB
Almost all SSDs are designed for use in laptops and not PCs or workstations. The issue is that on a low battery condition, a laptop will shut down or stop nicely so data loss from power faults is rare. On a PC, though, power faults and hard stops do happen from time to time unless you have a dedicated smart UPS that also can shut down your machine. These are more expensive than most home users want to pay for. I worked in IT for 5 years at a location that bought almost a thousand SSDs and the Crucial ones were far more reliable in desktop PCs than the other brands when it came to recovering from crashes or the machine suffering a problem/having to do data recovery. In general only the file they were accessing would be mangled, same as a mechanical drive. On other brands like Samsung, it was a die roll if the thing was corrupted. So we used these for desktops, workstations, and so on and used the other brands for laptop upgrades and similar where it was unlikely to encounter a power fault. ... show more
