  • I feel I am pretty good at math but I could not do these ...
Finally the media allows a dissenting voice to speak. I first heard of the author when a back page news item in my local paper announced that the author had been dis-invited from a Vatican panel/meeting on global warming. He was described as a global warming denier in the local paper, which he is not, if one were to have read his book. The author is apparently an expert in data modeling and a University Professor. He confesses that he is not a global warming expert. The volume is thin but seems well written and researched. The data set the author uses to draw his conclusions are derived from the same IPCC data sets other global warming researchers use. The author assures us that we can use the same techniques as he does to run the data ourselves and decide for ourselves what he has found. I feel I am pretty good at math but I could not do these calculations. However, I trust that since the author teaches these courses that he did these calculations competently. The author does not deny global warming he simply assigns the cause of global warming to increased sun spot activity. Sunspots are hotter zones on the surface of the sun and indicates the sun is sending out more energy. This activity has been documented to be rising since the 1600's. The CO2 data set, however has been documented directly over a much shorter period of time and indirectly over the past millennium. The author's argument is that current global warming theorists have artificially suppressed the radiation data and when they apply their models the CO2 data appears to be the cause of the global warming. The current theorists, he says, do not use standard mathematical modeling techniques and he says he does not understand why since they are not controversial nor esoteric techniques. The author runs the same IPCC data through a technique called "Identification" without suppressing any effects due to radiation from the sun, and concludes that global warming is best explained by the amount of sunspot activity which has also been rising over the past 400 years. He does say that CO2 rise, although not the dominant cause, may be contributory to this warming (Note, he does not deny global warming). The interesting aspect of the book is how his formula has been able to explain the current "global warming hiatus" which we have noted over the past decade. A fact that the current global warming experts did not predict despite the continuing rise in CO2 levels. The sun spot activity is currently on a downward cycle, so in Dr de Larminat's model it would explain the current hiatus. He predicts that this is probably a new trend and predicts further cooling till at least 2020. Interesting, that a recent SCIENCE magazine article has found new data that supports that there was actually no global warming hiatus, though it is not clear how they can retroactively have adjusted all temperature data and were able to draw this conclusion. It will be interesting to see how Monsieur de Larminat responds regarding finding data to fit the theory rather the other way around! ... show more
