  • Excellent humongous storage capacity - well recommended
Size: 8TB Style: Desktop HDD Color: Black
A friend sent me a $100 Amazon gift card, so I decided to use it plus about $45 to buy something I've long wanted: a lifetime supply of disk space. My prior drive, a Buffalo NAS, had about 1.5 TB on it after downloading files and saving video on it for ten years. So I decided to buy the largest USB drive I could find as I've had problems with NAS connectivity, and as I no longer have multipole computers, a local hard drive was appropriate. I have been using it both as a backup drive (I recommend Free File Sync, an Open Source backup program) and as a local Git repository for source code I write before pushing it to Github. The Seagate drive has provided flawless performance. When I first got it I plugged it in, hooked it to a USB port, and did a directory. There are a few small files including a drive icon. And I was pleased at the capacity listed: 8,001,427,599,360 bytes, preformatted for NTFS. It is what it promised: an 8 trillion byte disk drive. I noticed the drive was internationalized: it came with several plug types for different country electrical supplies. I presume the adapter regulates power and converts from AC power in UK or EU or JP or US/CA to whatever DC level it uses. The only thing I noticed is when it first starts it seems a touch slow, but this could be because my computer is not sending data fast enough at the start, or I have it plugged into a slow USB port, or something else, but once it's been running a few seconds it is very fast. For one person this is probably overkill, but it was way more than I could possibly use in my estimated remaining lifetime, so I won't need anything more. But if I did I would consider buying it again. ... show more

  • High-capacity storage for backups or read-mostly data
Size: 8TB Style: Desktop HDD Color: Black
Solid external 8 TB drive. Perfect for storing large read-mostly datasets, such as video. This drive should also function well for incremental backup. Note that this drive uses SMR technology. This means that very large writes can slow down, and the average write bandwidth will be much lower than the peak write bandwidth. Do not use this for a long-duration, random-access, write-heavy workload, such as blockchain archival. I obtained mine in January 2021 and it has just begun to show signs of failure after two years of extensive use in a home-built ML server, well exceeding the annual data transfer (read/write) rating, and including over 10000 spinning hours. This should be interpreted as a positive; it is a sign of good robustness. The nature of the failure is gradual, not catastrophic: several uncorrectable sectors have appeared. As such, we are transitioning this drive to scratch storage use. Unfortunately all hard drives fail eventually. For critical data, use a multiple backup solution such as 3-2-1, ideally with redundancy in each layer such as RAID, to minimize the probability of data loss. ... show more

  • Excellent value
Size: 8TB Style: Desktop HDD Color: Black
I bought this to replace my 6TB external drive that went t*ts-up. This one works well and was easily added to my iMac as the new Time Machine device. There are one light on the top back that indicates backing up is taking place but there is also some of the usual noise you hear from a mechanical drive. I use it with a USB-C fast connection and it does a great job with speed uploading and accessing via Time Machine. For a good old fashioned hard drive with moving parts it's a good value. My next purchase will be a SSD of 8TB or more once those things get cheaper. ... show more

  • Excellent Storage Capacity
Size: 8TB Style: Desktop HDD Color: Black
This product has been invaluable to store all the data I needed. It arrived in perfect condition, but due to its size, and need for its own power source (it needs to be plugged into a power socket besides being plugged to a computer), it is not as practical to transport or use as I would like. However, this has been a minor issue to deal with. ... show more

  • Two years later and only one issue
Size: 8TB Style: Desktop HDD Color: Black
Been using this drive daily for two years and it's had the same problem since day one. The port design if barely tapped disconnects the drive from my Mac system. I don't know if it's a design flaw of the cable/port or I just have a bad cable. Drive is fast and reliable and is providing ample storage for my photo exports. ... show more

  • Works great on a Mac, buttttt
Size: 8TB Style: Desktop HDD Color: Black
I have had no trouble with my 8TB drive working on my iMac. Yes, I had to reformat it and that took a little research online to figure it out. But it works great. So great that I'm purchasing the 16TB drive today because I've almost filled the 8TB up. I haven't tried to use it with Time Machine - I have a different drive for that - but I have no doubt it would work. Instead, I use it as extra space, loading all my media and documents on it. I love it. I know there are a ton of 'Doesn't work with a Mac' reviews, but I can only assume the steps it takes to reformat the drive scared them off. (Because yes, there is that slight moment of panic when you follow the directions and your computer warns you it's going to erase the entire drive.) But once the drive is reformatted, I haven't had one issue with it. I had MacOS Catalina when I bought it. I now have MacOS Big Sur. Still no issues. (Except for it getting filled up LOL - but that's my fault, not its ;) ) Update 3/8/21: For those who have BigSur on their Mac - the power distribution via BigSur is perfectly f'd up. So whereas before my update to BigSur, I could leave my external hard drives plugged in and when it started up the next morning, everything was fine, now with BigSur, I have to unplug my externals when not in use. ANNOYING - especially since my iMac retains its connection and won't let me eject them easily unless I turn it off! And this isn't Seagate's issue - this is VERY MUCH an Apple mistake they aren't fixing. What happens if I don't? The computer won't start. The loading screen will get to 25% and stall. Once it even slid off the edge of the screen. I have to then force the computer to stop. And then restart. Then it starts up (Usually). I love Seagate, but am not happy with Apple. I'm getting to the point where there aren't any computers I can trust. I won't do Windows and this will be my last Apple machine. We seriously need an OS that works, is stable, and won't steal our data. ... show more
