  • This thing just works! Buy it!
Style: Smoker
As a newbie to smoking, I bought a unit that was damaged but usable in every way and saved about 1/3 of the cost. The damage was minimal and cosmetic. Heck, I don't care what it looks like, I just want something that works! I applied the savings to chips, cover and thermometer. I live in an area that suffers frequent but short term power outages which steered me away from the digital units. When the power goes out for a few seconds before the generator kicks in, I don't have to worry about resetting or damaged electronics. It just starts back up where it left off. I also like the dual latches so the door stays evenly pulled closed. I don't tote my smoker around much but the handles make it easier to move. I do wish it came with a fourth rack but 3 is ok and depending on what you are smoking size wise, you may only need one. Inside smoking dimensions are roughly 12"d x 15"w x 22". I also like that the internal surfaces are pretty flat, including the shelf guides - makes clean up much easier! I had never smoked before but this thing makes it very easy! In the three months I have owned it, I have smoked hams, ducks, chicken, turkey, leg of lamb (bone in and was perfect!) hamburgers & chops and never disappointed! The temperature gauge on my unit runs about 10 degrees cool, but that is OK, its close enough. I recommend getting a 4 probe remote temperature sensor - you can get a good one for about $30 and saves you from having to open the door (letting the heat out) to check the temperature of your food. You can check it from pool :) I always wipe a bit of oil on the room temperature racks before placing meat on them and then popping it in to into the pre-heated smoker. Pre-heating is pretty quick and faster if you you hot water in your water tray. Once up to temperature, the outside stays relatively cool (ok, warm) and can be touched without being burned. Now the things that could be improved: Longer legs (or you will need something to set it on). A tad more air space for the chips to smoke just a bit more. Self cleaning feature could be better (kidding) Its "ok" to clean up if you don't let the dirty racks sit around for long. I do place foil just about the water and chip pans which helps a lot!. This is a good smoker and works without fuss. I recommend it highly. A year in... I have used this EVERY weekend! No issues, no problems. I did buy a (sold seperate) cold smoker unit so i could smoke cheese, rice and yes, pasta! ) it really is a GREAT low entry smoker! I actually bought a second one for our cabin. It is THAT good! ... show more

  • Great smoker
Style: Smoker
For several years I used a large gas fired smoker to make the usual jerky, sausages, bacon, etc. Now my family have all moved away and the smoker, although still doing a good job, was just too large for just me. So, I gave that smoker to friends and decided to try this smaller, electric, Charbroil smoker... Am very glad I did. So far I have been curing and smoking pork loins for Canadian/back bacon and its working like a charm.. Took a short learning curve and still have a way to go, but, its doing a really great job,,,,,, and the bacon is delicious... So, the package arrived and after a thorough check could find no dents or dings.. All parts were there as well..Assembly took about an hour or so working alone.. No problems at all. Was very impressed with the smoker, it is insulated, it looks very nice, fits in a small space, and seems quite sturdy.. I decided to smoke a cured pork loin for a trial run. I had some fairly wide temperature swings till I got the hang of adjusting the thermostat. I use applewood chips for smoke and one pan filled lasted about an hour. About three hours later the loin was finished, I let it cool then tasted it----was perfect! Very very delicious. I have smoked 5 or so more cured pork loins since the first and all have been perfect --just the way I like them... So am very pleased with the smoker... I wouldnt hesitate to buy another if necessary... I have found that as the meat smokes and comes up to temperature, I do have to adjust the thermostat to a bit cooler a couple of times, for me thats not any problem. The pan of wood chips smokes for about an hour or so, sometimes longer, and the smoke flavor is always just right, for me at least.. I purchased two items to go with this smoker,, a Veken two probe remote sending thermometer and since I use pink salt #1 in the cure I also purchased a Brefit scale for accurately measuring down to 1/10 gram. I have not regretted making either purchase. So, in summary, in my opinion I feel that for the cost this is a really good smoker that doesnt have many frills, but it gets the job done.. Thanks Charbroil... btw,, nobody is or has paid me to write this review,, its totally how I feel about this smoker... ... show more

  • great smoker for the beginner
Style: Smoker
This is my first smoker, it was economically priced, I didn't want to invest $$$ if I wasn't sure if I would like it. I researched other models and features, this unit was perfect for me, it fit my budget and did the job.I had a little trouble getting the temperature to be a steady 225* I got that figured out through when I seasoned the smoker the first time. My first food to smoke were chickens, of all the days to smoke; it rained! The smoker worked like a champ! No trouble at all, temperature did not drop even with rain hitting it. . Chickens came out great! Two things I should have paid more attention to: 1) I have to open the door to put in more wood chips! the smoker recovers the temperature quickly enough but would be better not to open the door at all.Wood chip bin is small. follow directions and don't soak the chips as the smoker takes longer to reach the desired temperatures. 2) The digital smokers seem to be a step up with conveniences like meat probe, ability to control temperature remotely, although I think it is better to have a watchful eye while smoking. Also, some have wood feeds or ways to add chips without opening the door. All in all, I am happy with my purchase. ... show more
