  • For better or worse, it's the original Tamagotchi
Color: Neon
My love for virtual pets from the 90's was re-ignited when I bought bandai's 20th anniversary re-issue of the original Digimon V-pet, which was literally Bandai's attempt to make a Tamagotchi marketed toward boys. I never personally felt like the toys were gendered so I loved them both as a kid. Well the Digimon re-issue had a high bar to clear, as it added tons of new features. You could battle AI foes. You could raise two digimon at the same time. You could choose from all of the different versions of the original digimon release giving you five times the number of digimon than the original release had, plus some new ones as well. You could also put your Digimon down for a 3 hour nap in case you were busy. This was all very unexpected to me and made it a much bigger value than I expected. I Well, being owned by the same company, I had high expectations for the Tamagotchi re-release. I don't think this is unreasonable, as the original Digimon is literally just a Tamgotchi with a multi-player battle mode. I was unfortunately let down. This is a perfect replica of the original 90's Tamagotchi. The casual buyer won't know this, but the original Tamagotchi comes in two versions, P1 and P2, and they both have completely different critters available on it, as well as a different mini-game. You can tell a P1 and a P2 apart because P1 will have checkered background, and P2 will have a wavy background. So you better know which one you want, or intend to buy them both, because you can't have both on one device. I don't know if this was done for the sake of being faithful for nostalgia sake, but I can't imagine there's that many purists who would bemoan some quality of life improvements for the modern age. To be fair, the Digimon pet was released in 2019 while the Tamagotchi came two years earlier, but I don't think that's an excuse. After all, a few years prior to that they had released a mobile phone remake of the original Tamagotchi that allowed you to choose between P1 and P2, and had an enhanced color mode that was completely free. They have since discontinued this app because it failed to give the results they were hoping for, which was to promote a fashion line, believe it or not. If you're absolutely itching for a classic digital pet experience, I'd recommend grabbing a 2019 Digimon while they're expensive. A much better value. But if you want the authentic 90's Tamagotchi experience, then this is basically the exact same as the old virtual pet that swept the world... they start off as needy little babies demanding undivided attention, and depending on how well you raise them, they'll either grow to become less needy, and stay healthy. For the record, you can't let their hearts dip below 2 empty hearts, or they'll evolve into the less desirable, more needy, sickness prone adults. You also can't ever give them sweets, as their weight will also lower their chances of evolving into self sufficient adults... really the only challenge in these things is getting over the super needy first three stages without letting it beep to get your attention. That's another negative, these little guys are loud. There is no volume settings, just mute, or loud. I don't remember Tamagotchis being as loud as this. I don't regret buying this thing, and I may end up buying another so I can have both P1 and P2, just for the sake of completing my small collection of virtual pets. But I think I may not come back to this one very soon after it's batteries dry up. I'm not entirely sure what the battery life is on these things but I heard some people have had to replace them as soon as three days after buying, and that's DEFINITELY not the Tamagotchi I remember, those little guys could go on for months. I do have to say that if you don't have a lot of free time, or you are easily distracted, don't buy this for yourself. Those first three stages require you to vigilantly check on it, and if you can't do that, it's not going to become easier in the adult stage, and certainly won't evolve into the secret stage. I also won't recommend this to children with attention issues, it's a bit dated for today's kids and is likely to distract kids when they shouldn't be playing with gadgets, and get neglected when something more interesting is in their grasp. This is more of a nostalgic novelty or a collector's item for virtual pet enthusiasts. And I can't state again, best bang for your buck when it comes to virtual pet nostalgia is the 2019 Digimon. ... show more

  • Speaker issues still present, very good looking shell, otherwise similar to original
Color: Black
(This review is for the 25th Anniversary version, but for whatever reason it shows it as for the Black color shell I bought previously) It wouldn't let me review the 25th Anniversary version without deleting my old review, but this is for the new one. It's identical to the first Tamagotchis that came out in the US other than some minor additions (like battery low indicator). Similar to the other rereleases, the speaker connection uses a spring. This is what causes the sound to be obnoxiously loud at times. Anyone who is wondering if it's louder than you remember--yes it is. I have a few vintage Tamagotchis from that time and they are much quieter. I modified one of my other shells so that the connection between the speaker and the contacts on the PCB is via two wires instead and it was MUCH quieter. Unfortunately it is a design flaw that has persisted in all remake models. The sound can be distorted and extremely loud as a result. Thankfully it can be muted by pressing the right button and then the left button at the same time. You can do this while on the time screen to pause it as well in case you are busy (it will say SET, and freeze your progress until you set the time again). Other than that mostly it is exactly the same. There is a new logo on this version, and if you're buying it for pure nostalgia you may not like that. Personally for me the jury's out on whether it's better or not, I'm mostly neutral on the change with a slight preference to the old one since...well, it's how it originally looked. Do note if you get anything other than a plain color or clear plain colored shell (like if you get a shell with a fancy printed design) that the designs can wear off on these as I've found with one of my others. Also, they are kind of grainy/have a low resolution look to the print on them if that makes any sense. As for the 25th anniversary shell, it's kind of a pearlescent purple color--the pictures don't really look anywhere near as nice as it does in person. These types of simple color shells tend to hold up to wear the best when it comes to these remake Tamagotchis. The oldest I've seen anyone raise the new ones is, coincidentally, 25 years. It seems giving your Tamagotchi snacks in this one will possibly lower its lifespan compared to the older ones. Overall it's a pretty faithful reproduction, the battery change is nice as CR2032s are easier to get than LR44s, but the speaker issue is a major flaw preventing me from giving five stars. ... show more

  • Worth the wait
Color: Purple
POV: You were born in the mid to late 80's. You're an adult now. You want the toy your parents refused to get you. You get it. It's a great little distraction on long trips and can help make sure you drink enough water through the day if you drink some whenever you have to deal with the fact they went to the bathroom or when you have to feed/enrich them. ... show more
