  • Awesome entry-level DSLR camera!
To be honest, the only reason why I bought this was because all modern digital cameras lack the manual control functionalities of the camera. Nowadays, everything is "automatically" managed by the computer within the camera which, in most cases, ruins the pictures. I am so glad that I made the switch to this camera! It does everything that my other cameras does not do! It allows me to manually adjust the focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and so much more! I will admit that the camera can be a bit "much" to those who are new to the DSLR universe, but I will say that after you play with the camera for a while, you will know all of the menus, options and their locations like a pro! What I love about this camera is that you have the ability to switch out the stock lens for a macro lens (those insane close up photos) or for a telephoto lens (for those far distant pictures) if you choose! For me, personally, the stock lens does more than enough, but if I have the urge to buy one of the other lenses, I can do that because the camera is made for expand-ability! Contrary to what others may say, personally, I believe that the JPEG images are super clean and crisp. While you are not supposed to use JPEGs for post-production, I believe you can get away with some minor post with these files. They are so clean with no visible JPEG compression artifacts! It's a shame that the NEF RAW format is not widely supported, but once it is, I would switch over as soon as possible to get all the color information you need from your photos! A little notice to new consumers: When you turn off your camera, disable the WIFI on your camera. I accidentally left the WIFI on and forgot about it. The camera, while in the "OFF" position, can still use WIFI, which will drain your battery quickly. But, on a full charge, if WIFI is turned off and dependent on your usage of the camera, the battery can last quite some time! All in all, I think that this camera is a steal for it's price! For those who want to experience a DSLR camera without breaking the bank, I will definitely get this camera before they're all gone! (I took 2 pictures of the camera, one with a more practical use of the camera, to show off the color reproduction. I took a photo of the grass in my backyard. The colors in that picture could not have been any closer to reality than it is in the photo! The second picture is a test to push the "macro" aspect of the stock lens to it's limits. It's a closeup of my TV, where you can see the subpixel elements. For me, it's a good-enough macro lens, but if I want to see the solder holding the pixels together, I have that option if I think the macro lens is a good investment!) ... show more

  • Best affordable starter camera
Don’t underestimate the quality of this thing. I’ve probably taken thousands of pictures at this point with it and you can definitely get good quality. It’s a good a starter camera and I’ve had it for 2 years now. Finally looking to upgrade soon :)

  • Just what I needed and its working out well.
I wanted something that could take good high resolution photos and integrate well with my computers and software. I am far from a camera/photo guy but it got really old using random junk I would fine and figured it made more sense to run out an get reference photos and maybe some textures for use in my 3d models. Funny thing is that I am actually having fun buggering around snapping pics of random things. Which means its pretty easy to get the hang of using this thing. A GOOD thing for me. Whats more, is that it can grow with me if I choose too my just swapping out to different lenses. Ya, happy camper and will be using this for SOMEtime to come in the future. ... show more

  • Excellent Entry level pro

  • Best camera out there for beginners IMHO
The d3500 is smaller, lighter and has a considerably longer battery life in comparison to the d3400. The controls are completely on the right side of the camera, which some larger-handed folks have mentioned as a down-side, however with the new redesigned grip I find it advantageous to be able to change the settings with one hand (I also have banana-hands). When taking continuous shots there is a bit of a longer buffer time, however this does correlate with the card being used so paired with a faster memory card say, a SanDisk extreme pro, you're in a much better position. For an entry level camera such as this one, you're actually able to pump up the ISO quite a bit before seeing that digital noise, which is impressive. The ISO shortcut has been removed on the d3500 from the d3400, but that's a minor issue for me. Low light photography lacked the brilliant colors seen with the naked eye, however a super quick tune up with the camera raw filter in photoshop and that was easily amended. Honestly the only thing that really chaps my ass is the removal of remote photography. I've ended up using the remote photography feature on the Nikon Snapbridge app for my phone (using bluetooth), however if you'd rather not deal with that fuss you can always select a timer. Pair this bad boy with a Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8G and boom, awesome intro set up for portrait photography. Love it! (just fyi all of these photos were taken with the kit lens f/3.5-5.6 18-55mm) ... show more

  • Can't Go Wrong With a Nikon
I just wanted a decent camera that took good quality photos and also took decent video. This one does the job for me and I'm very pleased with the overall function of it. I'll have to get another lens for it, though; this one just doesn't have the zoom capabilities that the "bigger" Nikons have, that's all. Perfect for beginners, too. ... show more

  • Excellent all around camera
I had a D50 DSLR for years and this is the replacement to that camera. Excellent night and low light features (aquarium no flash pictures were excellent). Very pleased.
