I’ve had these for 2 1/2 years now, and slowly replaced all my equipment with just LSX, a REL sub, an Echo/Dot for radio, and good streaming services. The speakers image like crazy, sound great on most things, and never bad on anything. With some time and effort with the sub, they can even rock without embarrassment. In our minimalist decor, they fit right in. Now…I don’t have enough room or time or reader patience to describe how awful the Wi-Fi is. I have tried everything anyone anywhere has suggested, have used three different routers, and NOTHING will guarantee an uninterrupted playback. I should mention that my current router, an ASUS RT-AX-88U, is like a rock with 30 other devices; but not the LSXs. Whatever you’re about to say, I tried that. KEFs help has been hard to come by, and was never more than a young sales team member at Best Buy couldn’t have come up with. Even the remote is shabby, with slow inconsistent response. I have put up with this because I like the sound so much, but if Sonos can design a good user interface, I think KEF could, too…if they cared. ... show more

It took me a while to appreciate the ravings everyone raves about. It was the second day having these, and just having tried Audioengine HD3, Edifier 1000, and having had Sonos for two years, is when they might have passed the test. The first day, I thought, well Sonos sounds great and these sound different but do they sound better? Better is subjective. Better enough to justify their price is even more subjective. Arbitrary. Now I realize that Sonos is a great speaker, especially with the connectivity and ease of use. The Audioengine HD3 is an excellent speaker. The Edifier 1000 is a great speaker, especially with tabla, it feels like it’s titanium tweeter renders tabla so delicately like buttery smooth. Absurd but that’s the best I can describe it. So, today is the second day of testing the KEF and third day testing the Audioengine HD3 and the six hundredth day of listening to Sonos. A couple witbiers to perk up my ears. Started with a few symphonies, Amadeus’ famed, Dvořák’s famed. Anoushka Shankar’s Bright Eyes. Zakir Hussain’s teen tal. Then Kiara’s Gold and Tennessee. Then Michael Jackson’s Scream on Spotify, Thriller, Scream, Dangerous, and boy does that 90s music makes these shine!! Each one of these excellent speakers render all music very very well. What makes me write this review for the KEF LSX? The space. The separation. If that’s what you care for, there is plenty. The Sonos make music sound energetic and wide but it’s still right there in front of you, and they render every detail that the KEF does too. The Audioengine HD3 do that too, separated but still everything is behind that monitor between the speakers. The KEF LSX, they do that detail, but they restrain that sound just a bit and stretch it and spread it around you, instead of the in-your-face thump of Sonos. Is that worth it? I don’t know. But it’s a different experience than some other excellent speakers for sure. Stream Michael Jackson’s Scream and decide for yourself. (I will not rate these five stars because if Sonos can do connectivity and ease of use well, so should KEF, if they pride themselves on their sound, which is great, no doubt. At ten times the price of other good speakers they better learn to do ease of use right.)     • Good sound, not so good software
You can tell that KEF is a speaker company, because at the core of this product is are some really good active speakers. Just as apparent is that software is not a core competency -- or maybe they outsourced that portion of the product. You would hope the out-of-box experience would quickly get to the point of hearing your new speakers, however the KEF app(s) waylaid that with firmware update and warranty popups. Seem like the firmware update was harder than it really should have been. Took 3 shots to get it completed. Might be the DHCP allocated IP addresses from my router were changing -- and screwing this up. For some reason the firmware update resulted in "cabled mode" between the speakers instead of wireless mode. Speaking of which, I discovered Wireless mode (between the speakers) can only achieve 48kHz/24bit. To get 96kHz/24bit you must run with the extra cable connected between the speakers. This is something the marketing literature didn't make very clear. After finally getting everything updated and setup, including opting for the cable connection between the speakers, an initial listening session was rewarded with some excellent audiophile quality sound. ... show more

    • Great Sound, Poor Connectivity
I really wanted to love these - for their size and price point they have a great soundstage/imaging and I'm not sure you can do much better given the constraints as far as sound goes. A little on the bass-heavy side for me and a little warm/colored but really for their size they are quite impressive. However, unfortunately the app/connectivity issues were a real dealbreaker. I spent hours debugging/reconnecting/going back and forth with KEF support trying to figure out why the speakers would not reconnect after randomly losing Wi-Fi connection. The Android application is very, very flakey and didn't work properly about 50% of the time. On the positive side, KEF support was very helpful and understanding of the issue but in the end we could just not get things to work and they suggested I either return them or try a replacement, but even then they were not confident that would do the trick. Perhaps it is something to do with my network but I have my doubts because other devices do not have this issue and I even tried static IP allocation for the device but still no luck. I have tried Sonos before and never had any of these issues, but Sonos unfortunately does not sound nearly as good. If you just plan on using these as wired computer speakers via AUX input then they will be a fine choice but if you plan on utilizing them for their wireless capability you might want to think twice. I ignored the other reviewers and thought the other reviews were just outliers, and to be fair maybe I am an outlier as well, but in my case it did not pay off. ... show more
