  • Nearly seamless, reliable communication
Size: Single Pack Style: Bold JBL Pattern: Headset
Not my first time using a comm unit in my helmet, but the first time I've used a Cardo unit. I read reviews regarding how easy it was to setup and use, and how convenient it was compared to other brands. I chose the Packtalk because we have a small but growing group of friends that ride casually, and wanted to have a "plug and play" communication option that let people drop in and out as needed. Setup was easy, particularly with the free App. Install into a helmet was a bit tricky, but not anymore than it is for other comm systems, and obviously this depends on your type of helmet. The package comes with two microphone options, an adjustable boom mic and a flat mic. The flat mic is supposed to be for full face helmets, whereas the boom is for modular or open faced helmets. The JBL speakers provide plenty of volume, although sound clarity is harder to judge. This will also depend largely upon your helmet - the more wind noise you pickup, the less quality of sound you'll receive. Having some concert earplugs that are designed to cut down ambient noise really help here, though you'll have to turn up the volume to compensate. The microphone works very well - communications both between units and over the phone come through clearly with little wind noise. You will have to adjust the sensitivity settings, however - wind noise can set off the voice command pickups, sometimes getting through to your fellow riders over their comms. The mesh feature, called DCM, allows riders to drop in and out of the group, and it works FLAWLESSLY. In 2000 miles of riding, we have never had an issue with it. Range on the unit was likewise great - not the max advertised, but is it ever? But good enough that even through twists and turns, communication still worked surprisingly far away. There are a few cons with this unit. The voice command pickups are finicky. They require the precise command, and there's lag sometimes, making you wonder if it heard you. The hand controls are easy to use, but the slim buttons are sometimes difficult to find through gloves. The volume wheel is imprecise, sometimes dropping volume by a little with a slight turn, sometimes a lot. For the software, the one issue we had so far was group setups. Perhaps due to its convenient drop-in/drop-out mesh programming, the PackTalk holds you in a group aggressively, making switching to another group a chore sometimes. But those quibbles are minor in comparison to the variety of good quality features, and the sheer convenience of the PackTalk Bold. You can purchase spare accessory and mounting kits for use in other helmets, without purchasing and configuring an additional unit. They even make mounts for half helmets. Overall, I highly recommend this device to all riders wanting voice communications for their group. ... show more
