  • More functionality for city drivers than a V2
Style: Single
This is a radar detector easily in the same class as a Valentine - but with a different set of features that I prefer. I was very skeptical of shifting brands, but having sold a 2014-era V1 and not having used a radar detector since, I had the opportunity for a fresh start. My list of requirements: high sensitivity for New Mexico long distance driving + GPS lockouts for city use. This was the only detector in my price range to do so without a secondary all. Coming from a V1 with the multi-segment display, having an OLED screen is a game changer. Not because it does anything useful for radar detection, but because it means I can get all the settings set without using a manual! There is also a "dark mode" in which a small white dot blinks on the OLED unless there is an alert, which is how I keep mine set. That gets you all the benefit of the no-distraction front of a V1 with all the information and voice alerts of the R7. On the 1.40 firmware (this model from Amazon was the soft-touch exterior with red accents, and arrived on that firmware) the auto-lockout feature works great. Similarly, I get relatively few false alerts in town. The user mark function is nice but I haven't come up with a good use yet. As far as range goes, on open roads you are getting many miles of detection range. Any of the major radar reviewing websites will do a better job of discussing range than I can, but suffice it to say the range is excellent for my needs. The cons: It's just not built like a tank the way the V1 is. At this price point, a metal case should be expected, or at least a truly tough plastic one. It's also a little bulkier. Lastly, the new-bogey tone overrides the speed lockout. Why?! So annoying! Finally, it has the option to display your speed along with the alert. I'd like to have an option to disable that - I know my speed. But that's a very limited list of cons. For mounting, I'm using a cheap mirror mount (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y2M9K11) with mirror power taps (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082V1245P) to get the detector in an optimal position with no visible cords. Even with the slightly bulkier detector, I like this mount method. I used to suction it at the very top, but I wanted it in the middle to get a balance between laser and radar sensitivity. Overall, you are getting the same features that require either a) multiple parts or b) much more expensive detectors in a single, good looking, functional package. I'm glad to see that the usual suspects in this area have competition. ... show more

  • OMG Great!!!!!

I drive so much it would make your head spin, and I have always had a Uniden radar detector to help me along the way. I decided to upgrade to this and there is so much of a difference that I just have to write about it. It tells you if the signal is coming from the sides, front or back which is amazing. Then, it auto mutes those pesky K bands after you pass them a few times with the GPS feature. You know, the ones that never move so you always hear them when you drive by? Well this mutes them so that you do not have to listen to it chirp. And then there is the range. I was 3 miles from a town and got a KA alert. It stayed with me and got stronger until I passed the officer in town!!! I know of one time it had to be at least a 4 mile heads up!!! Just incredible and well worth it ... show more

  • Pretty Good Detector
Style: Single
I’m not a radar detector connoisseur, I just wanted something easy to use and effective on a long distance drive. I wanted to install an integrated system in the car but unfortunately the shop that did some really nice work on other cars that I saw was booked out over a month and a half. I needed some protection right away, well at least in a week. So I ordered the R7 along with a dual socket cigarette lighter converter from Amazon. When I got the R7 I was a little surprised. It’s bigger than I thought it would be. I didn’t update it, just used it as delivered. My set up was a little hilarious. I ordered the dual socket cigarette lighter converter so I could run the R7 and an old Garmin GPS unit I found. The reason I used the Garmin was because I didn’t really want to flip back and forth between screens on my car’s console between the indwelljng GPS and the entertainment system (long drive-needed the screen for the radio/mp3 player on all times to pick and choose tunes). I also was running Waze on the smartphone. All in all it worked out OK. The R7 was pretty sensitive. All Ka hits were real. No false alarms. There were false positives on other bands for what I suspected were blind spot monitors and the automated cruise controls. They weren’t all that common and to be honest, they kept me on my toes for what was a fairly long multi-day pretty monotonous drive, in which I really wanted to keep up my average speed per hour. I liked the direction arrows. They were sort of helpful, especially in tge early long range hits where you’re not quite sure if the source is behind or coming up in front of you. The thing is a little pricey but as you all know, one ticket with points and the increased insurance rates can cost you more than the price of thing. ... show more
