  • Company made good; new version is much improved
Size: 16A Adjustable NEMA 6-20&5-15
I recently complained that the plug into my Bolt was not operative and not charging the car despite the charging box itself showing ok. Mustart worked with me and after a bit agreed the plug had gone bad. They offered to send me a complete replacement but, because I was out of the warranty period, couldn't do it without some charge. They offered and sent it to me with a significant discount. The new version seems much improved. Plugs in easy. The box and plug seem made to higher quality and certainly work charging the car so all good. ... show more

  • Good product with great support
Size: 16A Adjustable NEMA 6-20&5-15
I used this charger for about a year before I noticed the handle was starting to get warm during charging. Once after charging overnight I saw that the insulation for one of the connections had melted. Since it had been over a year since my purchase I decided to contact Mustart via email to ask if I could buy a replacement for the affected parts. They asked me to provide some photos and information from my charger and I was told they would send a replacement. I expected to receive just the parts, but Mustart sent me a completely new charger with everything! And I received it within three days of my first email! I really didn't expect such a high level of support, especially given how much time had passed since my purchase. In short, Mustart really stands by their products. So, if you're looking for a reliable Level 2 charger made by a company that really cares about their customers' satisfaction, I highly recommend Mustart. ... show more

  • It's a great hybrid L1 & L2 charger with minor annoyances
Size: 16A Adjustable NEMA 6-20&5-15
Pros: - it works both as a Level 1 (110V) AND Level 2 (240V) charger, with a max current in both cases of 16A (Level 2 is more than twice faster than L1). There are competitors (Lectron) which advertise L1/L2 but their charger only supports either L1 OR L2. - it has a deferred start function (i.e. charge 1, 2, 3 etc hours later) which can force your car to charge when the electricity is cheaper (e.g. at night). Cons: (mostly minor annoyances) - it fits too snugly in the car sockets (BMW X5 45e) so sometimes one thinks it's plugged in while it's not - between charges it often seems to rest a default charging current of 12A, for no clear reason. This can be manually changed back to 16A, but it's annoying and you cannot change the current when charging is ongoing (you need to unplug, change, replug). ... show more

  • Great EVSE!
Size: 16A Adjustable NEMA 6-20&5-15
I bought this Mustart EVSE to go with my new Bolt EV. The Mustart is made from sturdy, high-quality materials, and it works perfectly. I keep it unplugged, except when I use it. I plug one end into the outlet, then I plug the other end into my car. A green light on the car flashes, and the suspense is Hitchcockian; but, a few hours later, the car tells me that the charge is complete. Then, I unplug in the reverse order. That's it. Nada más. The advertisement for the Mustart and its manual state that the Mustart must be used with a RCD protected circuit. In the USA, this is known as a GFCI circuit. It is the same thing you need for a hot tub with jets. I like that the Mustart is portable and comes with a carrying case. I am pleased with the soft carrying case. I got a round one. It is made from a polyester material, and it is stitched together well. If I visit somebody with a hot tub that plugs in, maybe they will let me unplug their tub and plug in my car for a while. If I get a job at an appliance store--or a hot tub store--maybe I can plug in at work. There are 1000's of possibilities why portability is a good thing. It may come in handy during a zombie apocalypse, for example. In the mean time, the Mustart comes with a hook, so you can hang it on the wall of your garage. If your garage is especially dirty or damp, maybe you should keep your Mustart in its carrying case with one of those desiccant packets to keep it clean and dry between charges. Nonetheless, I don't know anything about you. Mine is hanging up in my garage. The Mustart is great. The price is great. The quality, functionality, and portability are great. If you need an EVSE, I recommend this one. ... show more

  • Alleged missing safety features and falsified certification marks
Size: 16A Adjustable NEMA 6-20&5-15
Short version: please do more research on this product and consider alternatives before buying it. At minimum, have a look at the other 1-star reviews. For more details, read on. I had bought this charger in Nov 2018, and it appears the currently listed version is different from the one I got as shown in my picture. While I ended up not using it myself (see footnote), I've since found multiple warnings against MUSTART chargers including reports of melting charging ports. Several of the 1-star reports on this listing show this. I feel this shouldn't happen for a product that claims overheating protection among its features. More seriously, when researching this further, I got pointed to a worrying safety report from Nissan. While I can't include links here, just search for "EPRI Infrastructure Working Council" to get the page of meeting materials from this group, and search for the following presentations: D1-3A - March 2019 EPRI IWC - EVSE Safety Analysis-ET D2-2 - June 2019 EPRI IWC - Non-listed EVSE follow up Halliwell The Nissan report claims that the MUSTART charger they tested has fake CE and TÜV Rheinland lab certification marks, "was found to be Non-Compliant with UL requirements", and does not have a CCID (charging circuit interrupting device) function at all. My charger that I bought under this product listing appears to match the one pictured in the report. While it's of course possible that these issues have been addressed in the current version of the product, I find it extremely worrying that manufacturers sell products like this, especially for a high-power charging cable where design or manufacturing defects could pose significant safety risks. Amazon has graciously agreed to let me return the item despite being outside the normal return window due to these concerns (thank you!), and the representative said that they would follow up on these claims. Footnote: First, the offers for getting an electrician to wire up a NEMA 14-50 plug were surprisingly expensive, and after some procrastination and thanks to COVID I didn't have a daily commute anymore. Then the Bolt recall asked me to charge the car outside which would have been difficult with the planned wiring. So I ended up sticking with the original 120V charger that came with the car. ... show more
