  • Love it!

Have had this smoker for about 3 years and love the performance. It smokes great and is well made. Assembly wasn't too bad, fairly well laid-out instructions and labeled parts. I did add on the wi-fi controller as my grill didn't come with one. That has been a useful feature. I also added the sidekick/sear box as this grill on its own is not very effective at searing (despite what it says about the 'slide and grill' feature....I never use that anymore). With the size of this grill I am able to do a full brisket and a couple racks of ribs at the same time...but that is about the max of what you can do. Pellets are easy to swap out. Sometimes I forget to remove the pellets and if it has been a long time since I've used it some moisture can get in there and clog up the auger, which is a pain to clean out. Usually this is when I don't think it will be as long as it is before I smoke something (often during winter) and has been like 3 months. If I'm using it fairly regularly (at least once every other month or more) it doesn't have that problem. ... show more

I purchased a Camp Chef after owning a Traeger for 8 years. I loved my Traeger for all the time I owned it. It just started having problems after eight years so it was time to buy a new Pellet Cooker. For $549 at Costco I could get almost exactly the same model I purchased before, but with a few upgrades. I decided to do a little more research before jumping into another Traeger even though I had always been pleased with my Traeger. After much on-line research I determined the Camp Chef to be the best value product at the price point I was willing to pay (Up to $700). I purchased my Camp Chef for $599 delivered to my front door. I certainly have not been disappointed. It was HEAVY and well built, it weighs approx. 144 lbs.. Assembly took a bit over an hour because I had watched an on-line assembly video the day before I received the unit.. I DID have problems with assembly at one point. Placing the lid on the pellet chamber was tricky and takes some very careful maneuvering of tools to get right. I am a bit of a mechanic, so when I got frustrated with it, I just drilled out their nut/bolt system and riveted the lid on with a hand riveter instead. Of all the issues I might have found, that was the only one and it was quite frustrating. You might not be as frustrated as I was, but I just said to heck with it and did it my way. It is solid and I am glad I did it. I burned the unit in by running it at 350 degrees F for an hour as recommended. I then began using it. I have used it for whole Chicken, Steaks, Roasts and Salmon. In every case I have been exceedingly pleased with results. Traeger always made me a hero when cooking. Camp Chef does the same and a bit MORE! I like that this product has a front shelf, a right side side shelf and even the pellet lid is a shelf. There is plenty of room to put your meat platters and cooking spices, utensils. I really love the SMOKE capability of the Camp Chef. Camp Chef has SMOKE Option for Low Temperature which I tested with a thermometer to be about 175 F (Salmon or cheese carefully) and High Temperature option which I tested to be about 215 F designed more for pre-smoking steaks, roasts, or anything else you want smoked and cooked at a higher temp. Camp Chef also has VARIABLE SMOKE option for anything you cook as long as the temp setting is below 350 F. You can set smoke in this unit on a scale from 1 to 10 at temps under 350 F and it works! I pre-smoke my steaks on High Smoke then I cook them at high temp 350 F on smoke setting 10 until they reach a temp of about 125 F. THEN I use the SEAR feature of the Camp Chef. I Sear my meat using their SEAR feature which utilizes a slide to reposition a steel plate to allow near direct flame to your meats. I use SEAR until the internal temp reaches about 140 F. I have never had my steaks turn out better. I really like the SEAR feature and so does everyone else who enjoys my seared steaks. In addition, I no longer have to open up my pellet grill to check temp of meat. Camp Chef comes with 2 meat thermometers and readings are displayed on the front digital readout panel. No need to open up my grill to check temp... I compared the readings from the grill to my digital readout high reliability temperature probe. They were always within 2-5 degree. I attribute any differences to slightly different positions in the meat. Another feature unique to Camp Chef is the ability to clean out your ashes from the fire pot without having to disassemble your cooker! I used to have to disassemble my cooker after about every 10-20 hours of cooking to clean out the pellet chamber of ashes. Otherwise it would get filled and clogged and eventually stop cooking. Now all I do is pull a handle after my Camp Chef has cooled down. This handle pulls a floor plate from under the pellet chamber and drops all ashes right into a metal cup mounted underneath the cooker. DONE! I empty the ashes from the cup and do not have to disassemble the cooker to clean the cooking chamber! What a great feature. Overall I am completely pleased with my Camp Chef concerning its cooking features and cleaning. I became an overnight Chef when I bought my first Pellet Cooker. The cooker was better than me and made me look better than I had ever been before. I am now an IMPROVED Chef cooking with a better pellet cooker. ... show more

  • It's a GREAT smoker, lots of extras
Style: Slide Smoker
Purchased in August of 2019 - Still LOVE it today and use it in all types of weather! Short review: 5 stars for a smoker, ease of use, the extras and clean up but we don't like louvered drip tray. 1 star for a grill - lack of smoke flavor and messy and grease dripped through the louvered drip tray into the bottom of the smoker box. Our goal was to get a smoker that was easy to use, clean up was simple, and gave a good smoke. If it grilled well it was a bonus but not a necessity. We researched and compared: Traeger, Pitt Boss, Green Mountain, and Camp Chef (CC) We chose the Camp Chef PG24MZG for the ease of cleaning and the dual temperature probes, a front shelf (which is a must) plus the glass view into the pellet bin. Purchased at Amazon for $599.00 + Tax. This model does not come up on the Camp Chef site for models. It must be searched by model number. Only found on Amazon and Camp Chef site but Amazon was cheaper as CC raised its price and is out of stock. There are two top racks measuring 8”x~20 each. They can be extended for a 16"x20" smoking area. The first 5 uses of CC Smoker were with Hickory pellets. 1st with Traeger (I could buy them locally, then with Camp Chef - ordered from Home Depot with free shipping. We've since used Kingsford pellets but prefer the Camp Chef brand for more flavor. 1st use was hamburgers on the SG grill function (slide pulled out for direct flame). The grill got into the 400 range and we observed 15 to 20-degree temperature swings. It took approximately 20 minutes to cook 2 burgers. The burgers lacked any smoke flavor - disappointed 2nd use - burgers cooked slower - used a 250-degree approach to get more smoke flavor. It took approx. 35-40 minutes. There were no grill marks and there was more smoke flavor but we were still disappointed. We will not cook burgers on the smoker. We don’t want to have to double cook by searing afterward. 3rd use - pork butt (small 4 lbs) cooked for 7 hrs. It had a nice smoke flavor and we pulled it at 185 to slice vs. pull. 4th use - lower rack beef brisket (5lbs) upper baby back Ribs 3lbs. Cooked on High Smoke for 9 hrs. Pulled brisket at 195. Nice smoke ring and good flavor, ribs were tender and smoke flavor. We observed 15 to 20-degree temperature swings. 5th use – 3 racks baby back ribs and 3 lbs. country ribs. We were surprised by the rain and got 1.3” while smoking. Our Camp Chef was near the house but not completely out of the rain and it did GREAT! The temperature stayed consistent, no water got in the pellet box or smoke area. Overall after 10 hrs, the ribs came out great! Over the past 2 yrs, we've filled it up and have smoked 2 15+ lb briskets at the same time and both came out flavorful and moist. All our meat has been very moist and we've smoked pork, beef, and chicken. Our previous smoker is a Weber 22" Smokey Mountain Cooker. We wanted something that would be easier to use and not require as much monitoring and we were willing to sacrifice some smoke flavor for ease of use and cleaning. The ease of use far outweighs any smoke flavor loss, and again, the meat has good smoke flavor. The ash cup is great! The one thing I would change is the louvered drip tray. The burgers dripped on it and into the lower section. The brisket also dripped on it and made a mess in the lower area. We put heavy aluminum foil on it to avoid the grease dripping onto the flame diverter and lower section. We have not seen any difference in the smoke flavor and it is very easy to just remove the dripped on foil and put a new piece on. Overall we HAVE recommended this smoker and absolutely would buy this smoker again. ... show more

  • Turns out great choice

Usually not a give review guy. Like many people have questions about which one to buy. My search lead me camp chef based on features like ash clean out. I have cooked on many times this last year and have had some issues. But camp chef belled up made everything good with replacement parts. Only downside you will need to be able to do the repair yourself. Like everything now days you can get help from videos on how to. I have no problem doing myself. I'm sure other brands have good products but service after sale always most important. ... show more
