  • WORST, the unit locks up if disk full - total data loss
Unbelievable, but true, if you run the unit out of disk space the NAS will lock up, there is no way to access the OS or the data. Your only option is to do a complete reformat and install of the RAID. Meaning TOTAL data loss. The OS has no warnings or safeguards. This is with the latest firmware 4 as of Sept 2018. Buffalo Tech Support will tell you to send the drives out to a third party for data recovery! That is their best fix. So I'm doing the amazon return right now on both the units I purchased. Glad it happened when the units were only a week old so hopeful I can purchase something more normal. ... show more

  • $800 paper weight
This thing is so slow it's unusable. I've been in contact with tech support for weeks and weeks now trying to get it to work faster and now it's so slow it's totally worthless. I tried to update the firmware and it crashed. I tried to plug it in directly to my computer using a CAT5e cable and the computer won't make a solid network connection. I asked if they'd return it and they said I have to go through the vendor I bought it from and guess what? Amazon won't return it either! This thing is a piece of junk. $800 of useless technology wasting space. Maybe I can turn it into a fish tank or something because it's useless for computer storage. DON'T BUY THIS! Update: It turns out that Mac computers are notoriously bad with NAS drives. They have to reindex the folders and make thumbnails every time you open it. So, the slowness of this drive is partly the fault of Apple. However, the fact that it didn't work over the WiFi still makes this product difficult to use. If you're a Mac user I'd find another option. ... show more

  • TeraStation 3410DN is a great buy for my home NAS
Size: 12 TB Style: TeraStation 3410DN Desktop NAS 4 Drive Bays
Purchased the BUFFALO TeraStation 3410DN Desktop 12 TB NAS, setup with Raid5. I've been waiting a while for prices to come down and I was not disappointed in a week of slamming the TeraStation. The setup was easy. Plugged in and turned on, discovered the NAS with DHCP, then set static IP address, and updated firmware. The firmware took about 20 mins and I started thinking that it was not going to work like one of the reviews, but it finished, just took longer than I thought. Came with WD Red NAS drives, not the green drives. Comes with iSCSI capabilities, which is great for my Win10 PC, so I can use it as a backup drive (without NAS mapping), plus I will do some testing with other Server VMs that iSCSI drives will be needed, SQL server, for example. There is a review on running out of space, so I set the alarm to email me when the space is less than 10%. I have transferred 4.5TBs in a few days of periodically loading up my old portable USB drives, and the transfer rate has been good. It is not slow. Depending upon if there are a lot of small files, then I see 1-20MB/s, when the files are larger, I see 30-70MB/s, and have seen a peak of 100-110MB/s. Overall good as expected on a gigabit ethernet. If you have a fancy home switch that supports link aggregation, then you can team (port trunking) both 1gbe ethernet links into a 2gbe link. Sadly, I don't have that kind of a switch at home, but the 1gbe is still very good overall. I've also setup the TeraStation to backup my DropBox and OneDrive data through the TeraStation cloud storage feature built in, and it is working well. Not everything is perfect though, the remote management app for an android (not sure about the iphone app), needs a bit of work. It's ok at best, but it does work once you figure out the two different apps required. Overall, if you are looking at reviews for this product, I have a background in IT, and IMHO this home NAS is worth the purchase. ... show more

  • Not sure the drives are up to snuff but ...
Size: 12 TB Style: TeraStation 3410DN Desktop NAS 4 Drive Bays
I love having this kind of storage available on my local network. I've been able to rip my entire media library to it and watch movies with Kodi running on a Raspberry Pi. It's made movie night a lot less stressful. The interface for this system is pretty good, and it's easy enough to set up and create shares with access controls. I do wish it didn't create Apple shares by default though, it creates a bunch of garbage files you don't need with Windows or Linux. What bothers me is that exactly 3 weeks after I got it and set it up, I noticed that drive 1 had an error and was kicked off the raid array. I was able to re-detect it, add it back to the array, and rebuild the RAID array, but 3 weeks is far too soon to have an error on what's supposed to be a high tolerance NAS drive - unless you believe the recent articles about HD Red drives using shingled magnetic recording - making them completely unsuitable for NAS arrays. For the time being, I'll be watching that drive 1 carefully and will be contacting support at Buffalo with some very pointed questions if there are any further problems. ... show more
